Public Sector

In recent times York has become an integral part of the central government machine, with an increasing number of departments and staff relocating to the area.

Research shows that the strength and appeal of the area is down to a high quality of life, education, housing and healthcare, low crime rate, great transport communications and strategic geographical position (half way up the UK). All of these contribute to a common feeling among many new residents that their move has had a substantial positive impact on the quality of life they experience.

York's prestige as a Public Sector location has been led by the many significant Public Sector organisations that are located here. Such as;

DEFRA:  The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has several offices in York, employing over 750 people.  These include the Pesticide Safety Directorate, the Meat Hygiene Service and other core DEFRA divisions.

Food and Environment Research Agency Established in 1992 FERA now employs over 700 people of whom 500 are scientists.
