Rail

York's railway history runs deep.  The advent of rail travel locally in the 1830's brought an economic resurgence, creating jobs not only within the rail industry itself but also in the wider economy.  The benefits provided by rail businesses in York today are no less important.

York is a railway centre that helps bring economic vitality to the local and regional economy. As a hub for rail travel it acts as an important gateway, providing sustainable access for a growing visitor economy. Benefitting from the services provided by East Coast, First Transpennine, Grand Central, Northern Rail and Arriva it enjoys quick and frequent access to the capital, Edinburgh and regionally to the coast, Leeds and Manchester.

York provides the headquarters for Network Rail’s London North Eastern HQ, around which a number of related infrastructure companies have settled. Network Rail are also currently in the process of developing a training centre close to the station. The train operating companies have a presence with both East Coast and Northern Rail, having centrally located Headquarters.

The number of rail-related companies in the city means that there is a critical mass of career opportunities for railway workers and the benefits of such an environment adds quality to the recruitment offer.

The Yorkshire Rail Academy is also based in York, providing a partnership initiative between York College and the National Railway Museum, and is supported by major rail companies www.yorkshirerailacademy.com/.
