Cycling City York
Cycling City York is a community-led partnership that has been awarded £3.68 million in government funding to improve and develop facilities for cyclists, and get more people cycling, between 2008 and 2011. Partners include City of York Council, NHS North Yorkshire and York, major employers, schools, colleges and universities, cycle campaign groups and cycle retailers. These organisations are supporting a programme of projects and activities aimed at getting people of all ages and abilities on their bikes.
York was one of 12 locations in the UK to be given Cycling Town or City status by Cycling England in 2008 and fought off competition from 74 other local authority areas to win the funding.
